Mumbai Rains Trigger Flooding, Disrupt Railways and Ferry Services; Metro Line 3 Station Flooded Amid ₹37,000 Cr Project

Mumbai saw intense rainfall leading to waterlogging in several areas including Khar and CSMT. Over 90 train services were cancelled, 16 ferry routes suspended, and part of the ₹37,000 crore Metro Line 3 project flooded. IMD forecasts continued rainfall throughout the week.

Mumbai: Torrential monsoon rains on Monday resulted in extensive waterlogging across areas of Khar, Santacruz, Andheri, and CSMT, causing a severe impact on daily activities, bringing rail services to a standstill, and triggering concerns over infrastructure preparedness in the city. 

On Tuesday, Swami Vivekananda Road in front of National College saw considerable water buildup, with pedestrians and traffic having to wade through water-logged roads. 

IMD Weather Update and Forecast

As per India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai will experience heavy rainfall on cloudy skies during the week. On May 27, the minimum and maximum temperatures will remain at 23.0°C and 31.0°C respectively.

  • May 28–30: Moderate rain, 24–32°C likely
  • May 31–June 1: Scattered rain and thunderstorms, max temp may reach 33.0°C

Rainfall figures from Monday show:

  • Supari Tank & Nariyalwadi Santacruz: 25 mm
  • Khar Danda Pali Hill: 24 mm
  • Vile Parle & Andheri Fire Stations: 15–14 mm
  • Versova Pumping Station: 11 mm

Ferry Services Suspended Across Coastal Maharashtra

With the southwest monsoon coming in early — the earliest since 1990 — the Maharashtra Maritime Board suspended operations on 16 out of 36 ferry routes in Mumbai and Konkan, including:

  • Gateway of India to Mandwa
  • Cidco Nerul to Mandwa
  • Dighi to Janjira Fort
  • Malwan Jetty to Sindhudurg Fort

The M2M Ro-Ro service from Ferry Wharf to Alibaug continues to operate.

Railway Services Paralyzed, Hundreds of Trains Disrupted

Heavy rains submerged tracks and platforms on Mumbai on Monday:

  • More than 98 train services were cancelled: 50 on Central Railway, 18 on Western Railway
  • Harbour line trains were most affected between 10:30 AM–11:30 AM
  • Fall of tree between Churchgate–Marine Lines and Mahalaxmi–Lower Parel disrupted WR services
  • 20 trains short-terminated at Dadar and Parel
  • Mail/Express trains delayed for a maximum of 2 hours

₹37,000 Cr Mumbai Metro Line 3 Affected Due to Water Infiltration

In the biggest infrastructure blow, the Acharya Atre Chowk underground metro station on Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Colaba–SEEPZ) was flooded on Monday. Water seeped in through an entrance on Dr Annie Besant Road after a reinforced concrete wall gave way.

Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) confirmed the accident and halted operations near Worli, sparking safety and engineering concerns prior to the onset of the full monsoons.
