Haryana: Fake CBI Officer Dupes Elderly Couple of Rs 10 Lakh in Panchkula

Panchkula: An elderly couple residing in Sector 2 of Panchkula fell victim to a scam, losing ₹10 lakh to fraudsters posing as fake CBI officers. Lalit Kumar, the Cyber Police Station In-charge of Sector 12, briefed the press about the incident that led to the registration of FIR number 57 on July 17, 2024.

Incident Details

The fraudsters sent a fake notice to the elderly couple, followed by a video call in which they impersonated CBI officers. This elaborate ruse convinced the victims to transfer ₹10 lakh into an account provided by the scammers.

Arrest and Investigation

Following the registration of the FIR, a police team traced the suspects to Jaipur and arrested four individuals involved in the scam. The arrested individuals are Sonu, Rupesh Chaudhary, and Abhinav. During interrogation, it was revealed that the account receiving the ₹10 lakh payment was rented under the name Sanjay Kumar Maurya.


Current Status

Out of the four suspects, two are currently in police custody, while the other two are under judicial remand. Ongoing interrogations aim to recover the defrauded money. Additionally, a police team has been dispatched to Rajasthan to investigate the accounts into which the money was transferred and to trace further leads.

This incident underscores the need for increased vigilance and awareness to prevent such fraudulent activities, particularly targeting vulnerable elderly individuals.
