Pune: Techie Assaulted, Robbed by Youths in Wadgaon Sheri for Refusing to Buy Liquor
In a disturbing incident in Wadgaon Sheri, Pune, a tech professional was beaten and robbed by a group of four individuals, including a minor, after he refused to buy alcohol for them. The incident occurred around 5:45 PM on Sunday.
The 29-year-old software engineer, a resident of Vimannagar, was at a liquor store in Wadgaon Sheri to purchase alcohol. A group of four approached him and handed over an ATM card, requesting that he buy liquor for them. Realizing they were underage, the techie declined and left the store.
Angered by his refusal, the group pursued his vehicle on their two-wheelers. They threw a stone at his car, breaking a window, and forced him to stop. They then dragged him out of the car, assaulted him, and stole his phone before driving away in his vehicle.
Arrest and Investigation
The Chandannagar police quickly responded to the incident, which took place about 200 meters from a police chowki. They arrested three suspects, Bala Salve (21), Abhijit Sampate (18), and Nikhil Darekar (21), along with a minor aged 17 years and 11 months. The suspects' parents are reported to be casual laborers.
Assistant Inspector of Chandannagar police stated, “When we arrived at the scene, we found two youths. Later that night, we apprehended the other two from Kharadi. CCTV footage helped us trace the car’s movement towards Kharadi.”
Context and Regulations
The assault comes in the wake of stricter regulations on alcohol sales following a tragic accident on May 19, which resulted in the deaths of two tech professionals. The authorities have since enforced tighter controls on the sale of alcohol to individuals under 25 years old.
The arrested individuals face charges of theft, assault, and other related offenses. The police are continuing their investigation to ensure justice is served.
