Thiruvananthapuram: Rare Wild Gaur Spotted Near Technocity Campus, Rapid Response Team Deployed

Thiruvananthapuram: The forest department has deployed a Rapid Response Team (RRT) in Andoorkonam panchayat, Thiruvananthapuram, after a wild gaur was seen wandering near residential areas. The animal was spotted at Kurakkode Ela in Velloor ward, close to the National Highway and Technocity campus, a location where wild animal sightings are rare, according to residents.
Led by Forest Range Officer Palode Remya S, the RRT is currently stationed at the spot. The team has received multiple videos and images showing the wild gaur walking past residential houses during the night and early morning hours. “The wild gaur has been here for at least two days. There is a bushy area near the Technocity campus and we believe the animal is somewhere here. The residents have been advised to exercise caution,” said panchayat representatives.
Efforts to Locate and Secure the Animal
Forest department officials believe the gaur may have strayed from its herd, wandering out of the forest and possibly traveling a significant distance from the Pangode forest area. “Driving it back to the forest is a challenge because it has come a long way. There aren't any forest areas at Andoorkonam. We are awaiting permission from the department to tranquilize the animal and relocate it. A forest veterinary doctor has arrived from Thekkady. All arrangements are in place. We are trying to spot the animal,” said Forest Range Officer Remya S.
Resident Advisory and Precautions
The forest department has advised residents to be cautious and avoid venturing into areas where the gaur has been sighted. The presence of the gaur near such a densely populated and developed area is unusual, and the department is taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of both the animal and the residents.
The swift action by the forest department highlights their commitment to managing wildlife interactions and ensuring the safety of the community. The efforts to safely locate and relocate the wild gaur continue as the team remains on high alert.
