Aadhaar Card Updates: Name and Date of Birth Changes Allowed Once, Address Unlimited - All You Have To Know
The Aadhaar card has become an essential document in India, playing a pivotal role in availing various government schemes and services. From opening a bank account to applying for scholarships and pensions, the Aadhaar card serves as a critical identification tool. It contains both biometric and demographic information, ensuring its importance in day-to-day activities.
But what happens when you need to update your Aadhaar card due to a change in your address, name, or date of birth? The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) allows users to modify their Aadhaar details, but certain rules and limits apply to how many times you can make these changes.
How Many Times Can You Change Your Name?
Aadhaar cardholders can change their name a maximum of two times. Whether due to spelling errors, a change in marital status (such as a woman needing to update her surname after marriage), or other reasons, users are permitted to update their name twice. Once the name has been changed twice, the system does not allow for further corrections. Therefore, it's essential to ensure accuracy during the name update process.
Date of Birth (DoB) Changes: A One-Time Opportunity
UIDAI allows users to modify their date of birth on the Aadhaar card, but only once. This one-time correction means that after your date of birth has been updated, you won’t have the option to make further changes. If there is a mistake in your DoB or you need to correct it, you must visit your nearest Aadhaar enrolment center. You will need to bring supporting documents, such as a PAN card, birth certificate, passport, bank passbook, or a certificate issued by a recognized university. Along with these, you must fill out the Aadhaar correction form.

Unlimited Address Updates
Unlike name or date of birth updates, there is no limit to how many times you can change your address on your Aadhaar card. Whether you move to a new city, change homes, or even switch rental properties frequently, you can update your Aadhaar address as often as needed.
The address update process is simple and can be done online. You can visit the UIDAI website at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in to your account. Under the Aadhaar update option, select "Proceed to Aadhaar update" and then choose "Address" as the field to update. You will be required to upload valid proof of address such as a utility bill or rental agreement, and pay a non-refundable fee of ₹50. Once the payment is made, your Aadhaar address will be updated within one to two days.
How to Change Your Aadhaar Address Online
To change your address, visit the official UIDAI website, log in, and select the "Aadhaar update" option. Choose "Proceed to Aadhaar update," select "Address" on the next page, and fill in your new address details. You will be required to upload valid proof and make a payment of ₹50 to finalize the update.
