Air India Bomb Hoax: A Fake Threat Costs ₹3 Crore in Just Hours! - Read Now

A threat of a bomb on an Air India flight led the plane to be quickly grounded under an emergency landing that resulted in a whopping financial loss of about ₹3 crore. The incident happened within just two hours into a journey from Mumbai to New York, when the aircraft landed in Delhi. The latest incident has underscored the need for high security in aviation.
This bomb threat, proved to be a hoax, caused major disruptions for Air India apart from financial losses. The aircraft was carrying 130 tonnes of jet fuel for the long-haul journey, but the passengers and cargo pushed the overall weight to about 340 to 350 tonnes. As much as ₹1 crore of that was spent for the emergency landing.
Besides, accommodation had to be made for more than 200 passengers and crew members who were accommodated in other airplanes or hotels. Once again, it cost the airline a lot of money. Compensation to the passengers, refund of their tickets, and new ground services cost over ₹2 crore. The incident not only affected the onward flight but also damaged its return journey, making the loss graver in terms of pecuniary implications.
According to reports, since that October 14 bomb hoax, airlines have received about 40 false threats and the cumulative loss is estimated to be as high as ₹60 to 80 crore. This incident clearly explains the heavy blows such a threat can cause to the aviation industry regarding passengers and airline operations, thereby clarifying the requirement for better security measures.
