Amazon India saw record-breaking growth for premium electronics and Apple and Samsung tablets on the third day of Great Indian Festival sales. Vice President, Amazon India Saurabh Srivastava told ET that Diwali marked another milestone. Apple sales were ten times what they were in the previous sale, and "remarkable" was the five times jump Samsung recorded as against last year, said Srivastava. It's part of a larger "premiumisation" shift wherein Indian consumers are increasingly displaying a taste for high-end products in all categories.

The Great Indian Festival sale, that began on September 27, has clocked in a massive 140 crore customer visits so far, with a 20% jump over last year. Notably, more than 85% of the traffic comes from non-metro cities, with a much wider reach and a growing appetite for premium electronics in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India. According to Srivastava, this category for premium products doesn't only penetrate major cities but also fashion and beauty, gaming laptops, as well as home appliances in non-urban markets.

One of the prime highlights of the sale was large-screen TVs, which accounted for about 30% of total TV sales. Samsung and Xiaomi topped the chart in the TV segment, followed by Sony as the customers preferred more oversized screens and premium brands. Srivastava elaborated, "Large screen TVs saw significant demand this year, driven by consumer preference for a more immersive viewing experience.".

While in electronics, the demand among large appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners are high. Preparation within the supply chain had caused phenomenal growth for premium categories-thereby 30 percent were sold as compared to previous year for front-load washer, side-by-side fridges, and above 1.5-ton aircons. According to Srivastava, "Premium segments such as front-load washing machines, side-by-side refrigerators, and above 1.5 ton ACs grew 30% YoY, which shows that people are ready to spend on quality home appliances that will last long".

Another key area where Amazon India has shown a marked rise this Diwali season is the increase in the number of B2B customers. There was an increase of 50 percent year over year in the number of new B2B customers during Great Indian Festival who shopped at Amazon Business for the very first time. This gives an idea about the impact of Amazon in the B2B sector, considering the increasing influence of more businesses getting their electronics and office supplies through the e-commerce website.

Overall, the Great Indian Festival 2024 of Amazon India has been a record-breaking affair as trends seem to suggest that consumers spent more on premium electronics, large appliances, and high-end gadgets. The overall demand for Apple and Samsung tablets depicts a shift in Indian consumer preference towards quality and durability, which promises to be a great foundation for growth in India's premium electronics market in the future.
