Car Sales September 2024: Mahindra Surpasses Tata Motors as Third Largest Brand - Read Now

The Indian car market in September 2024 saw a slight decline of 1.10% compared to last year. Total car sales reached 358,886 units, down from 362,876 units in September 2023. Despite this drop, some brands, like Mahindra and Kia, showed good growth.
Maruti Suzuki remained the largest carmaker in India, selling 144,962 units in September 2024. However, this was a decline of 5,850 units from the 150,812 units sold in September 2023, resulting in a 3.88% drop. Maruti still holds a significant market share of 40.39%.
Hyundai also faced challenges, with sales dropping by 5.79%. They sold 51,101 units in September 2024, down from 54,241 units the previous year. Hyundai kept its position as the second-largest carmaker, with a market share of 14.24%.
Mahindra had a great month, posting its highest sales ever. They sold 51,062 units, marking a 23.74% increase compared to 41,267 units sold in September 2023. This impressive growth allowed Mahindra to surpass Tata Motors and become the No. 3 car brand in India, securing a market share of 14.23%.
Tata Motors, on the other hand, experienced a decline. They sold 41,065 units in September 2024, down by 8.44% from 44,850 units in September 2023, holding an 11.44% market share.
Toyota recorded a positive growth of 7.37%, selling 23,802 units in September 2024, an increase from 22,168 units the previous year. Toyota’s market share is now 6.63%.
Kia saw strong growth as well, with sales rising by 17.49%. They sold 23,523 units in September 2024, up from 20,022 units in September 2023, capturing a market share of 6.55%.
Honda faced one of the steepest declines, with a 42.45% drop in sales. They sold only 5,675 units, down from 9,861 units in September 2023, giving them a market share of 1.58%.
MG Motor also saw a decline of 8.30%, with 4,588 units sold compared to 5,003 units last year, while Volkswagen sold 3,394 units, down by 4.88%. Skoda experienced a decline of 17.96%, selling 3,308 units.
Despite new launches, Citroen sales fell by 4.95%, while Jeep India faced a significant drop of 24.12%, with sales of only 365 units.
Overall, the Indian car market in September 2024 faced a slight decline, but brands like Mahindra and Kia demonstrated strong performance amidst challenges.
