Food Oil Prices Rise: What It Means for This Festive Season - All You Have To Know 

As the festive season approaches, many families are preparing for celebrations filled with delicious food. However, rising prices for cooking oils, especially palm oil, are casting a shadow over these joyful moments. According to the latest data from the Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA), food oil imports in India have seen a significant decline, leading to increased prices that may impact household budgets.

In September, India imported only 10,64,499 tons of food oils, a drop of 29% compared to the previous year. This decrease in imports is largely due to a reduction in the import of both crude and refined palm oils. Last year, the food oil import was as high as 14,94,086 tons, showing how much the situation has changed.

The SEA reported that the import of crude palm oil fell to 4,32,510 tons this September, down from 7,05,643 tons the previous year. Additionally, the import of refined palm oil dropped from 1,28,954 tons to just 84,279 tons. These numbers indicate a clear downward trend in the availability of palm oil, which is a staple in many Indian kitchens.

This situation has been attributed to several factors. First, there was an over-importation of oils during July and August, leading to higher stock levels at ports. With more stock on hand, the demand for imports has decreased. Furthermore, fluctuations in oil prices have made importers cautious, contributing to the drop in imports.
