How Dilip Piramal Built VIP Industries into India's Largest Luggage Company

In India's rapidly expanding entrepreneurial landscape, many industrialists are building their empires. Among them is a name that, while linked to the Ambani family, has carved out a distinct identity through his own achievements. This individual is Dilip Piramal, who has established VIP Industries as India's largest luggage manufacturer.

Dilip Piramal's Career

Dilip Piramal was born on November 2, 1949, into a prosperous family in Mumbai. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in 1970. Piramal began his career in the family business, serving as a director at Morarjee Mills in 1970.

The Rise of VIP Industries

Soon after, Piramal was appointed as a director at Blow Plast, which is the parent company of VIP Industries. Despite coming from a wealthy background, Piramal ventured into the business world with a clear vision. He decided to start his own venture, founding VIP Industries, which has since become the largest luggage manufacturer in India.

Piramal's brother, Ajay Piramal, heads the Piramal Group, and his nephew is married to Isha Ambani, daughter of Mukesh Ambani. Departing from the family's textile business, Dilip Piramal set up VIP Industries, innovating with four-wheeled luggage technology first introduced through the brand Skybags. What began as a small mill in Nashik has grown into a company worth ₹6,368 crore, with 8,000 retail stores and a presence in 50 countries.
