In a landmark decision, the Indian government has approved the construction of the country's largest rail-road bridge over the Ganges River in Varanasi. This multi-tracking bridge aims to connect two districts in Uttar Pradesh, significantly reducing logistics costs and improving transportation efficiency.

Project Details

The cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved this ambitious project with an estimated cost of ₹2,642 crore. The bridge will feature four railway tracks on the lower level and a six-lane highway above. This unique design allows trucks, cars, and trains to utilize the same structure, enhancing connectivity between Varanasi and Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

The bridge's construction is expected to generate approximately 10 lakh direct job opportunities, contributing to local employment. Additionally, this infrastructure project will extend the Indian Railways' existing network by about 30 kilometers, reducing congestion in the region.

Environmental Benefits

Beyond improving transportation, the bridge will help lower pollution levels and decrease transportation costs. It is estimated that the project will save around 8 crore liters of diesel annually, translating to a cost saving of approximately ₹638 crore for the public. This reduction in diesel usage will also help decrease CO2 emissions by 149 crore kilograms, equivalent to planting 6 crore trees.
