New Delhi — Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has surged to the top of the wealth rankings, becoming the richest person in Asia and India. As of July 31, 2024, Adani has surpassed Mukesh Ambani, who had long held the number one spot. This remarkable achievement follows a challenging period for Adani, who had to navigate the fallout from the Hindenburg Research report at the beginning of 2023, a situation that took over a year to recover from.

According to the Hurun India Rich List 2024, Adani’s net worth has surpassed ₹11.6 lakh crore (approximately $140 billion), propelling him to the top of the wealth rankings. The list highlights that India has seen a rapid increase in wealth creation, with one new billionaire emerging every five days as of July 31, 2024. This surge is contrasted with a decline in wealth creation in China.

In the latest rankings, Mukesh Ambani now holds the second spot with a net worth of ₹10.14 lakh crore (about $122 billion). Shiv Nadar and his family, founders of HCL Technologies, are positioned third with a fortune of ₹3.14 lakh crore (approximately $38 billion). Serum Institute's owner, S. Poonawalla, is in fourth place, while Dilip Sanghvi of Sun Pharmaceuticals holds the fifth position.

Over the past five years, six individuals have consistently been featured among India’s top ten billionaires. The current list also includes Kumar Mangalam Birla’s family in sixth place, Gopichand Hinduja in seventh, Radhakishan Damani in eighth, Azim Premji in ninth, and Neeraj Bajaj’s family in tenth.

This significant shift in the wealth landscape reflects India's growing prominence in global wealth creation and highlights the dynamic nature of the country's economic landscape.
