Ratan Tata, the renowned industrialist and former chairman of Tata Group, passed away on Wednesday night at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital. He was in the hospital's ICU since Monday and was 86 years old at the time of his death. His passing has sent shockwaves through the business community and beyond, as many remember him for his significant contributions to India's industrial landscape and his commitment to philanthropy.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to attend Tata's funeral in Worli, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to Tata’s half-brother, Noel Tata, who is actively involved in several Tata companies. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde, and Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani were among the first to rush to the hospital upon learning of Tata's demise, highlighting the respect and admiration he garnered from various sectors.
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was one of the first visitors to pay his last respects at Tata's Colaba home. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also shared heartfelt condolences, stating, "Saddened by the passing away of Shri Ratan Tata, a leader par excellence, visionary industrialist, and philanthropist whose contributions have left an indelible mark on our society." She emphasized his dedication to ethical business practices and social responsibility.
Tata's body was taken from the hospital in an ambulance, escorted by police vehicles, to his residence in Colaba. For those wishing to pay their respects, his mortal remains will be displayed at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai from 10 am to 3:30 pm on Thursday, followed by his last rites later in the day.
