RBI: 97.92% of ₹2,000 Notes Returned, Only ₹7,409 Crore Still in Circulation

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on Thursday that 97.92% of the ₹2,000 currency notes have been returned to banks. Only ₹7,409 crore worth of these notes remain in circulation with the public. This follows the RBI's decision on May 19, 2023, to withdraw the ₹2,000 banknotes from circulation.
According to the RBI, the total value of ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, was ₹3.56 lakh crore. By July 31, 2024, this had decreased to ₹7,409 crore.
How to Exchange ₹2,000 Notes
The facility to deposit or exchange ₹2,000 banknotes was available at all bank branches across the country until October 7, 2023. However, the RBI has continued to offer the exchange facility at its 19 issue offices since May 19, 2023.
Facilities at RBI Offices
Individuals and entities can also deposit these notes into their bank accounts at the RBI's 19 issue offices from October 9, 2023, onwards. Additionally, people can send their ₹2,000 notes to any RBI issue office via Indian Post for deposit into their bank accounts. The 19 RBI offices offering these services are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
