In a new round of layoffs late Saturday, Elon Musk’s social networking startup Twitter Inc. made more hiring reductions.
According to those familiar with the matter, the layoffs affected personnel on teams across the organisation, including engineering and product. According to the persons, some employees received a termination email late Saturday, while others tweeted that they discovered their termination after they were unable to access into the company’s internal system.
Though reports estimate there were dozens, it is unknown just how many workers were affected. More than 50 workers were let off, according to an earlier report in The Information.
Bloomberg News contacted Twitter after regular work hours but received no response.
Esther Crawford, one of the executives in charge of Twitter Blue, the website’s subscription service, was one of those let go, Platformer’s Zoe Schiffer tweeted on Sunday.
She famously tweeted in a message that went viral shortly after Musk took control of Twitter last year that occasionally workers would have to #SleepWhereYouWork in order to fulfil deadlines.
A request for comment made outside of normal business hours was not immediately answered by Crawford.
A number of company founders who joined Twitter through acquisitions in recent years, including the founders of the design studio Ueno and the mailing startup Revue, tweeted on Sunday that they had also been fired. In the past, Twitter made an effort to keep founders on staff in order to prevent hastening the vesting of larger stock grants, according to people familiar with the business.
Following his $44 billion acquisition, Musk cut more than 3,700 people at Twitter, or half of the company’s employment, in an effort to reduce costs.
