After Maharashtra, Gujarat  postpone Board Exams, all eyes on CBSE

Maha Edu Minister Gaikwad: Class 10, 12 board exams not cancelled

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is now being expected to postpone the examination for class 10 and 12 students. This came as a result of the postponement of class 10th and 12th exams, announced by the Maharashtra and Gujarat state boards.

Under the normal academic calendar, the board conducts the examination of class 10 and 12 in February and March. Last month, the CBSE had informed that the two national boards were thinking about the postponement of examination or cut in the syllabus.

CBSE usually releases its date sheet for class 10th and 12th board exams in December. In 2019, the board had released its date sheet in November because it had decided and subsequently announced to cancel the examination. However,  the board has so far not released any date-sheet for the 10th and 12th board exams this year.

While many states have allowed schools to run classes voluntarily, others are still preventing the gathering of the students in the schools due to rising covid-19 cases. The state government started announcing the postponement of the board exams. It may have been the driving reason behind the growing expectations of the parents and students for the postponement of the class 10th and 12th boards exams.

Maharashtra education minister Varsha Gaikwad recently said that it was possible to hold class 10th and 12th board examinations till May 2021. However, her announcement was accompanied by permission to reopen the schools from November 23, 2020.

Following the suit, Gujarat also announced to conduct GSEB 10th and 12th board examinations in May 2021. Andhra Pradesh has also indicated a delay in the interminate examinations to April 2021. Telangana and Uttar Pradesh are likely to make a similar announcement.

After many states announced a delay in the academic calendar until May 2021, CBSE is expected to make a similar announcement. Sources familiar close to the board have informed that the decision would be announced if taken.
