Amity University Eyes U.S.

Amity University, one of India’s largest private education institutions, is preparing to make its debut in the United States by acquiring a 170-acre campus on Long Island, New York, for around $22 million. This will be the university’s first confirmed presence in the U.S. after earlier attempts to purchase the New England Institute of Art near Boston and the Art Institute of New York City failed due to regulatory concerns.

The move reflects Amity’s broader global strategy, as the university already operates campuses in countries including the United Kingdom, China, and South Africa. Founded in Delhi in 2003 and run under the Ritnand Balved Education Foundation, Amity is aiming to expand its global presence by attracting international students, building research collaborations, and creating academic opportunities that connect different regions.

However, Amity’s entry into the U.S. has not been smooth. Regulatory bodies in Massachusetts had previously expressed doubts about the university’s capacity to meet American higher education standards, citing concerns over financial preparedness and academic quality. These concerns ultimately led to the cancellation of its proposed acquisitions of the two art institutes.

The newly acquired Long Island campus will still need to clear significant hurdles before becoming fully operational. Amity must seek accreditation from U.S. regional authorities and gain approval from the Department of Education, a process known to be stringent and highly competitive. The university has previously secured accreditation for some of its campuses in India and Dubai, but adapting to the U.S. system will be a critical test of its credibility.

Despite these challenges, Amity has reiterated its commitment to quality education and global standards. Its U.S. expansion is being viewed as an important milestone in showcasing its international ambitions and its determination to become a recognized player in global higher education.
