Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has urged Union Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan for establishing a Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Marine Biotechnology at the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) to preserve the Marine ecosystem in Odisha.
On February 16, 2021, he wrote a letter to Union Minister Harsh Vardhan, telling him that the coastline ensures millions of jobs to the workers and has previously been envisioned as a marine-led Blue economy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Blue economy belongs to all activities related to the ocean while making efforts to minimize the environmental damage and ecological imbalance created by the exploitation of the ocean resources.
It offers sustenance and employment to millions of those engaged in fishing, travels tourism, trade, and logistics. Puri Jagannath Temple, Konark Sun temple, Chilika Lake, and Bhitarkanika National Park are the foundation of Odishas tourism, Pradhan said.
“Projects like the expansion and development of Paradip Port, IOCL Paradip refinery, Paradip Smart Port city, development of Dhamra LNG Terminal, DighaGopalpur coastal highway and development of fishing harbours at Paradip and Balasore will unlock the true potential for marine-led economic growth in Odisha and eastern India,” the letter said.
