One-Year M.Ed Course to Replace Two-Year Program Starting 2026-27

From the 2026-27 academic session, the NCTE has announced a one-year Master of Education (M.Ed) course in place of the two-year one, and it is as per the recommendations made by the National Education Policy 2020.
It was not very long since NCTE came out with its decision of reverting to one-year Bachelor of Education course discontinued in the year 2014. There would now be one-year B.Ed courses and a parallel one-year M.Ed courses that the candidate will be offered with.
Eligibility to avail One Year M.Ed:
Candidates who completed their one year's B.Ed are eligible as told by the chairman of NCTE, Pankaj Arora:
One year's B.Ed courses
Two-year teacher education programs
Four-year integrated teacher education courses
New M.Ed Syllabus Under Development:
The syllabus for the one-year M.Ed program is in the offing and will invite applications from institutions in 2025. The program will formally start from the 2026-27 academic session. Though the mode of admission, whether entrance exam or merit-based, has not been decided yet, it is expected that testing procedures will be the same as for other teacher education programs, which are conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Eligibility for One Year B.Ed
Postgraduate pass candidates or Four year integrated teachers' education courses will be qualified to take on the one year B.Ed degree. A full curriculum framework has also been created for this degree program in-line with NEP 2020.
This is a significant change that will make teacher education streamlined and efficient, leading to a better pathway for future educators, with adherence to the latest standards of education. Further updates regarding admissions and examination processes are expected soon.
