Smriti Irani: Committed to support and protect children orphaned due to COVID-19

The government is committed to support and protect children orphaned due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani said on May 26, 2021.

She also cited a report of states and union territories that saw the deaths of around 577 children.

“GOI [Government of India] is committed to support and protect every vulnerable child due to loss of both parents to Covid-19,” Irani tweeted.

She came into action after several posts for the adoption of the orphaned children were seen widely on social media platforms.

“They are under the watch and protection of the government,” the official said, adding “We have collected this data from each state government, and we are in touch with them to ensure that these children either get institutional care or are in the care of their immediate family.”

According to the official, the government is giving Rs. 10 lakh to each of the districts under the Integrated Child Protection Scheme and it will ensure a familial setting for the orphaned children.
