Censor Board Demands 120 Cuts in Controversial Punjabi Film ‘Punjab 95’

The Indian Censor Board has ordered significant edits to the upcoming Punjabi film “Punjab 95,” directing the filmmakers to cut 120 scenes and even suggesting a title change. Directed by Hani Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the film is based on true events surrounding human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra and his efforts to expose corruption and violence during the Punjab riots.

Initially, the Censor Board had requested 85 cuts, but following a review by the revising committee, the number soared to 120. This drastic measure has sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing that such extensive cuts could compromise the film’s integrity.

The Censor Board has also recommended renaming the character based on Khalra, suggesting the name “Satlej” instead. This change has ignited controversy, as team members argue that Khalra is a revered figure in the Sikh community and altering his name disrespects his legacy.

Furthermore, the board has advised against referencing Punjab and its districts throughout the film, citing potential negative public impact. Locations in Canada and the UK should also be omitted.
