From Laxmii to Padmaavat, these Bollywood movies had to face name backlash

What is entertainment industry when there is no juicy controversy every now and then? Be it an actress’ dress or an extra alphabet in a movie’s name, there is always some corner for drama and controversy. When it comes to names to Bollywood movies, the phrase “what’s in name” doesn’t hold any meaning. The change of name is a constant game in B-town.

Before the release of Akshay Kumar starrer Laxmii, the movie had to witness some controversial backlash. If reports are to be believed, some Hindu groups took offense of the movie title because it was hurting the religious sentiments of Hindu community. This is not the first time, when the nation is witnessing such controversies in Bollywood. In some cases, Bollywood could have an upper hand, here are some other movies that had to go under a name change.

1. Padmavati to Padmaavat

Considered to be Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s crowing achievements and ranked amongst one of his biggest projects, this movie enraged controversies like no other. As per a report published in a leading daily, a 10-crore bounty was placed on Deepika Padukone’s head. This led to an increased security of the actress. After a huge spree of nationwide riots and vandalized protests, the movie was released as Padmaavat and not Padmaavati. The makers were accused for distorting historical facts and malicious representation of Rani Padavati of Chittor.

2. Billu Barber to Billu

Yet another controversial Bollywood movie that had to change its name for a successful release. The protagonist of the movie was a barber and hence it was earlier named as Billu Barber but later on, the movie witnessed criticism from the barber’s community of India. The barber community wanted the removal of word “barber” or its replacement with the word “hairdresser”. At last the movie was released as Billu and it went on to become a commercial success.

3. Mental Hai Kya to Judgementall Hai Kya

Starring Kangana Ranaut and Rajkumar Rao, the movie raised a few eyebrows right after the release of its posters where the lead actors were posing with blades int their tongue. As per several media reports, Deepika Padukone’s Live Laugh Love foundation, Indian Medical Association, and Indian Psychiatric Society sought a revision of the name because the name was clearly portraying mental health in a funny manner. However, the makers easily came in terms with the suggestions and renamed movie title to Judgementall Hai Kya.

4. Loveratri to Loveyatri

This coming-of-age movie was released in 2018, which marked the entry of Aayush Sharma in Bollywood. The movie trailer had shown a young couple meeting on the night of Garb and Navratri and they fall in love. Things soon went downhill with this wordplay and the makers of the movie had to go into trouble of FIR and legal notices. Vishwa Hindu Parishad filed a complaint against Salman Khan. But later, Salman Khan shared the revised name of the movie, which was now called Loveyatri and he wrote, “this is not a spelling mistake.”
