International Emmy Awards 2020: Netflix’s ‘Delhi Crime’ wins Best Drama Series award

Netflix web series Delhi Crime won the award for the Best Drama series at 48th International Emmy Awards 2020. Directed by Indian-Canadian director Richie Mehta, the web series stars Shefali Shah, Rasika Duggal, Adil Hussain, Vinod Sherawat, Denzil Smith along with a set of many talented artists.

This fictionalized crime-drama is police procedural web series, based on the painstaking investigation into the Delhi gang-rape case of 2012. The award ceremony was conducted in a socially distanced manner, from the comfort zone of everybody’s homes due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Director Richie Mehta paid tribute to the victim and her mother, in the acceptance speech. He said, “I dedicate this award to all the women who not just endure the violence that so many men inflict on them, but are then tasked to solve the problem. Finally, to the tireless mother, and her daughter. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about you both and what the world subjected you two to. And I hope none of us ever forget that.”

Shefali Shah played the lead role of Vartika Chaturvedi in the web series, couldn’t really control her beaming emotions and excitement over this huge win. Shefali Shah’s character was based on former DCP of Delhi Police, Chaya Sharma, who cracked the grievous case of Delhi gang rape within 72 hours of the incident.

Delhi Crime has become first Indian program to win an award at 48th Emmy Awards, one of the most coveted honours in the television industry. The show premiered on Netflix in March 2019 and received massive acclaim for its detailing into a horrific gang rape case that thrilled the entire nation and made global headlines.
