Gong Yoo’s Honest Reaction to South Korea’s Shocking Martial Law Declaration:

Actor Gong Yoo, known for his captivating roles, recently shared his thoughts on the martial law declaration issued by President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 3. The announcement sent shockwaves through South Korea, causing widespread disruption, including the cancellation of Gong Yoo’s co-star Seo Hyun Jin's press interview.

In a press interview on December 5, Gong Yoo opened up about the surreal experience of living through the national emergency.

The Chaos of an Unexpected Crisis

Like many others, Gong Yoo was caught off guard by the sudden declaration. Describing the moment as "unbelievable," he likened it to a scene from a movie. At the time, he was working from home, unaware of the chaos unfolding around him. When his Trunk team began sending frantic messages, Gong Yoo realized something major was happening.

"It was pure chaos," he recalled. "That’s when I turned on the TV, and it was all real. A moment I never thought I’d experience in my lifetime."

Though the martial law was officially lifted on December 4—just hours before his interview—Gong Yoo admitted that watching history unfold live left an indelible mark on him.

A Surreal Reflection Amidst 'Trunk' Promotion

Despite being in the middle of promoting his new Netflix series Trunk, Gong Yoo found himself reflecting more on the national crisis than his show. Trunk, a mystery thriller about a secretive marriage service and a mysterious trunk that appears on a lake, had already captivated audiences since its release on November 29. However, the press tour, which was meant to focus on the series, was overshadowed by the shocking events surrounding martial law.

Gong Yoo’s ability to juggle his personal reflections with his professional obligations speaks to his resilience. "It was a strange night," he said. "I stayed up, waiting for the martial law to be lifted, just like everyone else."

Despite the disruptions, Trunk remains an exciting, must-watch series. For Gong Yoo, though, this press tour will be remembered not just for its drama but for the unexpected suspense of a national crisis.
