Ministry Targets HYBE Over Workplace Bullying Scandal: Is K-Pop’s Biggest Label in Trouble?

The Ministry of Employment questions HYBE’s workplace culture amid bullying allegations involving NewJeans’ Hanni. Is HYBE’s reputation as K-pop’s leading label in jeopardy?

Ministry Targets HYBE Over Workplace Bullying Scandal

HYBE Corporation, the agency behind the popular K-pop group NewJeans, is facing serious criticism from the Ministry of Employment and Labor over allegations of workplace bullying. The controversy revolves around NewJeans member Hanni, who has accused a manager of mistreatment. These allegations come at a time when HYBE was recently honored as one of the "2024 Korea Top Job Creation Companies" by the ministry.

HYBE's Job Creation Award Under Scrutiny

Last month, HYBE was recognized by the Ministry of Employment and Labor for its efforts in creating a positive work environment and promoting "horizontal communication." This evaluation praised the company’s initiatives to foster open dialogue between employees, regardless of rank, and encouraged one-on-one meetings between staff members to ensure transparency. HYBE's Chairman, Bang Si Hyuk, was also lauded for his global influence in the music industry.

However, these praises now seem contradictory in light of the bullying allegations within the agency. Representative Park Hong Bae from the Democratic Party has called for HYBE’s award to be revoked, citing the workplace bullying controversy as a direct contradiction to the ministry’s recognition of the company.

Workplace Bullying Allegations Against HYBE

The bullying allegations began when NewJeans member Hanni claimed that a manager from Belift Lab, a subsidiary of HYBE, instructed others to "ignore her." Hanni believes she has been mistreated and singled out within the agency. However, Belift Lab has denied these claims, stating that CCTV footage and witness interviews prove the accusations are unfounded.

The situation has caused a stir, particularly because Hanni is set to appear as a witness at the National Assembly's audit on workplace bullying in the entertainment industry. The audit will take place on October 15th, where Hanni will provide her testimony about the alleged bullying within HYBE.

Public Reaction and Criticism of HYBE

Representative Park Hong Bae voiced strong concerns about how large entertainment companies like HYBE treat their artists. He stated, "This scandal shows how major companies betray the public and mistreat their most valuable assets—their artists. HYBE’s selection as a top job creation company must be revoked immediately due to the clear evidence of a workplace bullying cover-up."

Fans of NewJeans and the public have expressed mixed reactions. Some are sympathetic toward Hanni, while others are waiting for further clarification from HYBE and Belift Lab regarding the investigation.

Hanni to Appear at National Assembly Hearing

Hanni has confirmed her participation in the National Assembly audit through the fan communication app 'Phoning.' She will be joined by Kim Ju Young, the CEO of ADOR, the label responsible for NewJeans, as they address the accusations of workplace bullying. This hearing is expected to bring further insight into how the entertainment industry manages workplace issues and whether artists are given proper protection and respect.

A Challenging Time for HYBE

This controversy has sparked a larger conversation about how entertainment companies manage their staff and artists. With HYBE under fire, many are now questioning the company's leadership and commitment to creating a healthy work environment.

As this situation unfolds, the Ministry of Employment has the power to revoke HYBE’s top job creation designation if the allegations are proven true. The public and industry insiders alike are watching closely to see how HYBE responds to these serious accusations and whether changes will be made to prevent similar issues in the future.
