Yoo Yeon Seok’s Tax Fine Slashed—Here’s What Really Happened
Actor Yoo Yeon Seok’s tax penalty was reduced from 7B KRW to 3B KRW after the National Tax Service reevaluated his case and clarified tax law interpretations.

Actor Yoo Yeon Seok's tax penalty has been significantly reduced after a review by the National Tax Service (NTS). Initially fined 7 billion KRW ($480,000 USD), the actor is now required to pay 3 billion KRW ($206,000 USD). His agency, KingKong by Starship, confirmed on April 10 KST that the reduced fine has been paid in full.
The change follows a dispute regarding how Yoo Yeon Seok's income was classified. The NTS originally taxed his agency's earnings under personal income rather than corporate income, leading to a case of double taxation.
How Double Taxation Caused Yoo Yeon Seok’s Tax Controversy
According to his agency, Yoo Yeon Seok has managed various activities under a company he established, including content creation on YouTube and business ventures in the food service industry. These were initially taxed as personal income, which triggered the high penalty.
However, after clarifying the scope of the income and its proper classification, the NTS agreed that some of the penalty stemmed from a misinterpretation of tax law. This clarification led to the reduction.
Since 2015, Yoo Yeon Seok has expanded his brand through digital content and entrepreneurship. His YouTube work, considered an extension of his entertainment career, was managed through an independent agency.
The NTS initially viewed these earnings as personal, not corporate, prompting the hefty tax. The actor’s representatives pushed back, stating the income should be treated under corporate tax law. This eventually led to the successful tax reevaluation.
No Tax Evasion Involved, Confirms Yoo Yeon Seok's Agency
To address public concern, KingKong by Starship emphasized that the penalty was not related to tax evasion. Instead, it was the result of conflicting interpretations of tax rules.
“Yoo Yeon Seok has paid the full amount due based on the reevaluated tax. There was no intentional wrongdoing,” the agency said.
