Tovino Thomas, a prominent actor in the Malayalam film industry, has recently voiced his concerns regarding the Justice Hema Committee report, which sheds light on the harassment faced by women in the industry. Thomas expressed his disappointment that the Malayalam film industry seems to be the sole focus of criticism following the release of the report. In an interview with The Indian Express, he shared his views on the broader implications of the findings and the unfair scrutiny his industry has received.

Tovino Thomas Speaks Out

The Justice Hema Committee report, released by the Kerala government, delves into the discrimination and exploitation experienced by women within the Malayalam film industry. Tovino Thomas, who spoke to the committee, emphasized that the problems highlighted are not exclusive to his industry. He pointed out that similar issues exist across various sectors and industries worldwide. “Yes, I spoke to the committee. This committee was set up only in the Malayalam industry, that’s why we’re talking about things happening in the Malayalam film industry. If such a committee is set up in any other industry, not just films, or anywhere in the world, you’d know that this problem exists even there,” he said.

Thomas expressed his frustration at the perception that these issues are unique to the Malayalam film industry. He clarified that not everyone in the industry is involved in or perpetuates such behavior. “Not everyone in the industry is going through that or perpetrating that. According to the report, people are going through those terrible things, and some have done that. But not everyone, I want to clarify that,” he added.

Call for Accountability and Awareness

In his conclusion, Tovino Thomas stressed the importance of holding those responsible for harassment accountable and ensuring that such incidents do not recur. He highlighted the need for education and awareness to foster safer working environments for women. “We need to focus on punishing those who harass and exploit, and work towards preventing these incidents in the future,” he said.

The Justice Hema Committee report, a 233-page document, was finally released after four and a half years and has been critical of the challenges faced by women in the Malayalam film industry. Tovino Thomas’s remarks reflect a call for a balanced perspective and a broader understanding of workplace issues across various fields.
