With the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, this year got translated into the year of binge-watching TV shows and movies. People chose to watch web series more than ever.
ith entertainment being locked down indoors, there has been a huge spike in users searching for various subjects but most of them were related to TV shows and movies.
As 2020 is in its last month, Google released its annual ‘Year in Google’ search results and it became crystal clear that in the time of pandemic, we Indians googled for TV shows, movies and web series the most.

Released during the beginning of lockdown in April, part 4 of Money Heist topped the list of most searched web series in India. Spanish crime-thriller Money Heist ask La Casa da Papel is ranked amongst one of the most popular web series on OTT platform. The show has a huge and cult fan following in its homeland, Spain and in India as well. Created by Álex Pina, the web series will also release its fifth and final season.
Directed by Hansal Mehta and Jai Mehta, Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story created a huge buzz with its premiere on SonyLIV OTT platform in October. The series focuses on the life of stockbroker Harshad Mehta, his journey from rags to riches and how Indian stock market scam happened. Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story is based on a book named, he Scam: Who Won, who Lost, who Got Away by Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu.
During the COVID 19 pandemic, popular reality TV show, Bigg Boss released its 14th season and became the third most searched show on Google in India. This season of Bigg Boss witnessed Bollywood actor Salman Khan as the show host. There were many Indian celebrities who were seen as contestants on Bigg Boss 14.
As the much awaited second season of Mirzapur released on Amazon Prime Video in October, the show received massive appreciation. Directed by Karan Anshuman and Puneet Krishna, the story of politics and power continues in this season as well. The show will have its third season as well.
Produced by Anuska Sharma and starring Jaideep Ahlawat, the show depicts the story of an under-performing cop who gets huge gig in his career. Loosely based on The Story of My Assassins by Tarun Tejpal, the series was released on Amazon Prime Video in May.
Apart from these, Sex Education, Dark, Breathe Into The Shadows, Bandish Bandits and Special Ops were also in the list of most searched web series in 2020.
