Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chasmah fame Munmun Dutta posted a video on Sunday where she was seen using a casteist slur nonchalantly. Social media went up in wildfires as people requested for accountability and an apology fro her.
Dutta, who playing Babita Iyer in Hindi sitcom TMKOC, was seen saying, “Main YouTube pe aane wali hoon aur main achha dikhn chahti hoon. Bh***i ki tarah nahi dikhna chahti hoon.”
The term she used was coined in the 19th century denote members of a Dalit caste employed in sanitation and manual scavenging. It is extremely derogatory and insensitive to use this word in the 21st century.
By Monday, #ArrestMunmunDutta started trending on Twitter, requesting authorities to book Dutta under the SC/ST act of the constitution.
Munmun Dutta’s apology
After being slammed on social media, Munmun trimmed the video she had posted and issued an apology. She wrote, “This is in reference to a video I posted yesterday where in one word used by me has been misinterpreted.
She went on, “It was never said with the intent of insult, intimidate, humiliate or hurt anyone’s feelings. Because of my language barrier, I was genuinely misinformed about the meaning of the word. Once I was made aware of it meaning I immediately took the part down.”
She further wrote, “I sincerely would like to apologise to every single person who have been unintentionally hurt by the usage of the word and I sincerely regret for the same.”
