Netflix Summoned by National Commission for Protection of Child Rights Over Explicit Content

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has issued a summons to the OTT platform Netflix. The notice, reportedly issued due to concerns over sexual content, accuses the platform of making such material easily accessible.
According to sources, the summons was issued in response to complaints that Netflix is broadcasting explicit content, potentially violating the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act, 2012. The commission has raised concerns that such content is being made available without sufficient restrictions, potentially impacting minors.
Monica Shergill, Vice President of Netflix India, has been directed to appear before the commission on July 29 to provide a response to these allegations.
In a letter issued on Tuesday, the commission stated that Netflix is showcasing inappropriate and explicit scenes, which could be in violation of the POCSO Act. The commission had previously sent a letter to the OTT platform in early June, but no response was received. Consequently, the commission has now taken a stricter stance by issuing a summons for the hearing.
