Oscars 2021 mark the 93rd year of the most prestigious award in the film industry. The Academy Awards of this year were different in a lot many ways. While the world celebrated the history making director, the event also honoured stars that have gone by. This year, owing to the pandemic, the award show was organized in a socially distance manner.
Like every year, the remembrance segment were also held at the 93rd Academy Awards. In 2020 as well as 2021, the world of cinema suffered huge losses in the form of many iconic stars. From Irrfan Khan to Helen McCrory, various celebrities were remembered at the show.
Oscars 2021 remembers Irrfan Khan and others
Irrfan Khan, who had a wide range of movies to his credits, passed away on April 29 in 2020. The 53-year-old actor was battling cancer for two years. Besides Bollywood, Irrfan had also worked in a number of Hollywood movies. With his stellar performance in the global cinema, Irrfan became a house-hold name in Hollywood.
His international projects include The Namesake, Life Of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire and Jurassic World. He was also remembered for his work in acclaimed movies like Paan Singh Tomar, Maqbool and the BAFTA-nominated The Lunchbox.
Bhanu Athaiya remembered at 93rd Academy Awards
Meanwhile, the In Memoriam segment of the award show also included late costume designer Bhanu Athaiya. The 91-year-old designer passed away in 2020. She had won India’s first first Oscar for her work in 1982 film Gandhi. Bhanu had worked in more than hundred movies including Lagaan, Swades, Chandni and Agneepath.
On the official ‘In Memorium’ page, Soumitra Chatterjee, Sushant Singh Rajput, Rishi Kapoor, Shashikala were honoured.
Besides, the Academy Awards also honoured the Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman who passed away last year. Cloris Leachman, Sean Connery, Helen McCrory, Christopher Plummer, Olivia de Havilland, Hal Holbrook, Ian Holm, George Segal, Cicely Tyson and Max von Sydow were also remembered.

This year, the academy awards announced two historical wins. Asian-origin Chloe Zhang won Nomadland. Best Director for Nomadland while Yuh-Jung Young Best Supporting Actress for Minari. Nomadland also won Best Picture.
