The Sabarmati Report Ticket Prices Drop After Tax-Free Status: Here’s the Math

Vikrant Massey’s latest film, The Sabarmati Report, based on the 2002 Godhra train carnage, has been declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. Directed by Dheeraj Sarna, the movie revisits the tragic burning of the Sabarmati Express that resulted in the deaths of 59 passengers. According to Sarna, the film brings forth hidden truths about the incident after 22 years.

The film has also received praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several state Chief Ministers, leading to its tax-free status in these states. Let’s explore how the tax exemption affects ticket prices and what political leaders and the cast have to say about the decision.

Ticket Prices Made Affordable

The tax exemption will significantly reduce ticket prices for moviegoers. For instance, in a Greater Noida cinema, ticket prices ranged from ₹130 to ₹160. A ticket costing ₹160 previously included ₹12.21 as CGST and ₹12.21 as SGST, making the net price ₹135.58.

With the tax removed, this ticket now costs ₹135.58, a reduction of ₹25.42, or approximately 15%. Similarly, a ₹500 ticket will now be available for around ₹425. The tax-free status ensures that audiences can access the film at a more affordable rate, making it easier for more people to witness this powerful narrative.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath commended the film’s attempt to reveal the truth about the Godhra incident. “The film has made a meaningful effort to bring forth the truth. Many attempts were made to hide what happened to the kar sevaks near Godhra station, but now the reality is out. We congratulate the entire team and are declaring the film tax-free,” he said.

Other states followed suit, emphasizing the significance of the story and its importance in educating the public about this historical event.

This is a significant moment for us. The film is based on a true event, and it took 22 years to bring the truth to the people. We are thrilled with the tax-free status, which will help more people watch our work,” Massey shared.

The Sabarmati Report not only revisits a pivotal chapter in Indian history but also aims to shed light on the events that shaped public discourse for decades. The tax-free status across six states reflects the film’s impact and the importance of its message.
