Saif Ali Khan stabbing case: 19 fingerprints help Mumbai police identify attacker

Mumbai Police have made significant progress in the Saif Ali Khan stabbing case, identifying and arresting a suspect named Mohammed Shariful Islam, alias Vijay Das. Islam, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, allegedly attacked the Bollywood actor at his Bandra home on January 16 during a failed robbery attempt.

The investigation revealed 19 fingerprints of the suspect at the crime scene, including the bathroom window through which he entered and exited, the duct shaft, and the ladder he used. These fingerprints, considered crucial evidence, have strengthened the case against Islam.

How the Investigation Unfolded

Despite running the fingerprints through state and national databases with no matches, police suspected the involvement of a foreign national, eventually identifying Islam as a Bangladeshi. Following the trail, the police tracked Islam’s movements using CCTV footage at Bandra, Dadar, and Worli stations.

Islam was seen eating parathas at a food stall, where his UPI payment provided a key lead. The trail led officers to a labour camp in Thane. Additional clues from contractor Jitendra Pandey, who had been in contact with Islam, helped the police pinpoint his location.

Arrest and Police Custody

After hours of searching through mangrove bushes in Thane, more than 100 policemen, including teams from the Crime Branch and Thane Police, successfully apprehended Islam. He was presented in a Bandra court on Sunday and remanded to police custody for five days for further investigation.

Key Evidence and Re-enactment Plans

Police are now focusing on recreating the sequence of events to solidify their case. Islam is expected to revisit Saif Ali Khan’s house on the 11th floor of the Satguru Sharan building in Bandra West. He has confessed to entering the building through the duct, confronting the actor, and escaping via Bandra Railway Station.

The Saif Ali Khan stabbing case highlights the meticulous work of Mumbai Police in tracking and capturing a suspect. As the investigation continues, authorities are confident that the evidence collected will lead to a conviction, ensuring justice for the high-profile case.
