Shakeela new poster: Richa Chadha’s sexy South siren avatar looks promising

A new poster of Richa Chadha starrer Shakeela was launched on Monday. In her upcoming movie, Richa Chadha essays the role of Shakeela Khan, who was one of the biggest stars of the 1990s from Kerala and acted in several adult films in languages spanning Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

Holding a gun in her hands, dressed in red saree and purple glasses, Richa Chadha has displayed her gorgeous and fierce side. The poster also shows various Hindi abuses graffitied on the wall behind lead actress, insulting her for the colour of her skin, her body type, religion and what not.

“This year Christmas gets hotter. In cinemas,” the caption on the poster read.

Helmed by Indrajit Lankesh, the film revolves around the life of adult film star, Shakeela Khan who took up a career in films at the age of 16 and later rose to prominence. The film maps Shakeela Khan’s journey to success and how her glamour and glitz faded away with time.

Lankesh had Shakeela as his passion project ever since he came to know about the Shakeela Khan’s rags-to-riches story.

Speaking about Shakeela’s popularity, Lankesh told Mid-Day, “The Malayalam film circuit was dominated by male actors when Shakeela entered the scene. She rose in popularity as her films would run for 100 days in every centre in south India. The superstars started feeling threatened. Eventually, due to backlash, her films were censored and she had to return her advances to many producers; she had to go back to her one-room apartment. Through the film, we’ll show what a woman goes through in a male-dominated industry.”

Shakeela’s films were also translated into foreign languages like Mandarin and Russian. Kinnara Thumbikal in Malayalam was one of her most popular films.

Featuring Pankaj Tripathi and Malayalam actor Rajeev Pillai, Shakeela will have a multilingual theatrical release on Christmas this year.
