On Netaji’s 125th Birth Anniversary, let’s take a look at some of the highly acclaimed movies based on his life:
#1 Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2004)
Filmmaker Shyam Benegal has shown Sachin Khedekar as Bose. The 2004 movie has been the biggest film production on the nation’s hero till date.
The film gives us a deep insight into Bose’s escape from house arrest, leaving India and formation of INA (also Azad Hind Fauz).
Bose’s experience with Nazi Germany, INA’s defeat, his death and trial of the INA soldier are also major highlights in the movie. The film received two national film awards.
#2 Subhash Chandra (1966)
This 1966 biographical is directed by Piyush Bose and is originally made in Bengali.
Starring Amar Dutta, Samar Chatterjee, and Ashish Ghosh, the film tells us about the life of Netaji in his younger days.
The film explores Bose’s life through childhood, college days and his experiences with Civil Service exam.
#3 Bose: Dead/Alive (2017)
Based on Anuj Dhar’s 2012 book, “India’s Biggest Cover-Up” features Rajkummar Rao as Netaji. Created by Ekta Kapoor, the film had Hansal Mehta as the Creative Producer.
The show tries to probe the mystery behind Netaji’s death, reason behind Mahatma Gandhi’s telegram to Bose’s family and many unsolved mysteries.
“Our intention is to portray Bose as a contemporary hero, a rebel who worked in different ways, thereby making him relevant and a part of today’s youth,” Mehta had said at the time of the show’s release.
#4 Netaji (2019)
This Bengali-language television series also showcases the childhood and youth of Subhash Chandra Bose just like the 1966 film, Subhash Chandra.
The film showcases Abhishek Bose in the titular role.
Netaji shows Bose’s transformation to a freedom fighter. It also stars Dhruvajyoti Sarkar, Kaushik Chakraborty, Sriparna Roy, Debopriyo Sarkar, Sohan Bandopadhyay, and Fahim Mirza.
#5 Raag Desh (2017)
A Tigmanshu Dhulia directorial, the period drama focusses on how Netaji formed INA contributed towards the struggle of freedom from British rule.
The film stars Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Mohit Marwah and Mrudula Murali, and was released in 2017.
#6 Gumnami (2019)
The release features Prosenjit Chatterjee as Netaji and is helmed by Srijit Mukherjee. The 2019 film reflects upon the media narrative how Netaji lived in disguise as an ascetic known as Gumnami Baba.
Another film, Sanyasi Deshonayok, from documentary filmmaker Amlan Kusum Ghosh on the same subject, is scheduled to release this year.
