The Sabarmati Report Goes Tax-Free in Haryana After CM Nayab Saini’s Screening

The Haryana government has declared the film The Sabarmati Report, based on the 2002 Godhra incident, tax-free in the state. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini made the announcement after watching the film with his cabinet members in Chandigarh. Previously, the film had already been made tax-free in BJP-ruled states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the film, calling it a valuable effort to bring truth to the forefront.
On the evening of November 19, CM Nayab Singh Saini, along with Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, several MLAs, and the film’s director Ekta Kapoor, attended a special screening of The Sabarmati Report at DT Mall, Chandigarh. After the screening, the Chief Minister announced that the film would be exempted from entertainment tax in Haryana.
Speaking to the media, CM Saini said, “The film presents one of the darkest chapters of our recent history with authenticity and sensitivity. It allows the voices of 59 innocent victims to be heard, showcasing the truth with dignity.”
A Film That Reflects History
The Sabarmati Report portrays the tragic Godhra incident and its aftermath, highlighting critical moments in India’s history. The film’s cast includes Vikrant Massey, Rashi Khanna, and Riddhi Dogra in lead roles, with direction by Dheeraj Sarna.
Released on November 15, the film has received appreciation for its factual narrative and sensitive depiction of events. CM Saini praised the filmmakers for handling the topic with grace, saying, “The movie brings an important truth to light in a way that resonates with audiences.”

BJP-Ruled States Show Support
Haryana joins Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in granting tax-free status to the film. The move is seen as a way to encourage more people to watch it and engage with the historical realities it depicts.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the film in a tweet. “It’s good to see the truth coming out in a way that’s accessible to the common man. A fake narrative can only last so long. Eventually, the truth prevails,” he said.
With endorsements from prominent leaders and tax-free status in multiple states, The Sabarmati Report is drawing significant attention. Its gripping narrative and historical importance make it a compelling watch for audiences across the country.
