Actor-Politician Vijay Stands Strong with Parandur Farmers Against Airport Project!

Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay is set to meet with farmers and residents likely to be affected by the proposed Parandur airport project near Sriperumbudur. This visit, scheduled for Monday, marks his first such engagement since forming his political party in 2024. Vijay’s visit comes on the 910th day of protests against the project, highlighting his growing involvement in the issue.
Vijay’s Solidarity with Protestors
Vijay’s visit is expected to show his solidarity with the people who have been protesting the airport project, led by the Parandur Pasumai Vimana Nilaya Thitta Ethirppu Poratta Kuzhu (Parandur Struggle Committee). The protest committee, which has been actively opposing the project, displayed a message on the blackboard at Ekanapuram village that reads “Vendam Vimana Nilayam, Vendum Vivasayam,” which translates to "Don't need an airport, need agriculture." This slogan has been put up daily for over two years, reflecting the committee’s steadfast opposition to the project.
Vijay is expected to criticize the ruling DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) for its push to implement the airport project, which locals believe would severely impact their agricultural livelihood. His meeting with the protestors is anticipated to be a significant move for his party, as it will be his first engagement with the community since the formation of Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) last year.
The Growing Opposition to the Airport Project
As the proposed interaction approaches, the usually quiet villages near Sriperumbudur have become bustling with activity. Vehicles and people are seen streaming into the area ahead of the event. The meeting will take place at a marriage hall instead of the originally planned venue, Ekanapuram Dr Ambedkar Ground, due to security concerns raised by the police. Despite these challenges, the committee has arranged vehicles for people from 13 villages to attend the meeting.
This visit is significant for Vijay, as it marks his continued political engagement with local issues. In 2024, he formed his party with the stated goal of contesting the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The event is seen as a show of strength for the newly-formed party, which has already indicated its intention to form the next state government.
TVK’s Growing Political Influence
Vijay’s involvement in the Parandur airport project protests aligns with his party’s broader goal of championing local issues and representing the people. The visit will further solidify his party’s presence in Tamil Nadu politics as they set their sights on the upcoming elections.
As the political landscape in Tamil Nadu continues to evolve, Vijay’s actions and leadership in this ongoing protest reflect his commitment to advocating for farmers and opposing policies that threaten their livelihoods.
