Failing Students in 5th and 8th Grades Won’t Be Promoted: Centre Ends ‘No Detention Policy

In a major shift in education policy, the central government has abolished the 'No Detention Policy' for students in classes 5 and 8. Under the new directive, students failing their final exams in these grades will not be promoted automatically to the next class but will be given a chance to retake the exams within two months of the results. Only those who pass the re-examination will be promoted to the next grade.

Try to Enhance Learning Results

The government stated that it intends to make this change in policy in a bid to ensure the students attain adequate knowledge before they can progress. Previously, there was the 'No Detention Policy' whereby students passed regardless of their results; this had become a significant source of concern in terms of low education standards.

No Expulsions for Failure

The new provisions ensure that no child will be expelled due to failure. Instead, those children who fail at the initial attempt will receive academic support and a second chance for clearing the exams. Provision has been made to keep in mind all the circumstances prevailing during the first examination that have affected the performance of that child.
