8th Pay Commission: Government Employees Might Get Salaries Hiked Between Rs 8,000 and Rs 26,000, Fitment Factor 3.68x
The Modi government has finally agreed to the 8th Pay Commission, and this is an exciting news for central government employees and pensioners. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed the development, stating that it will benefit 49 lakh employees and 68 lakh pensioners.
Since independence, seven Pay Commissions have been implemented with the objective of making government employees receive fair wages. The 7th Pay Commission was started in 2016 and created a stage for the minimum pay structure, fitment factors, and pay matrices that could be restructured.
The term of the 7th Pay Commission will end in 2026. To ensure enough time for the drafting, review, and implementation of recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission, the government has initiated the process in 2025.
Salary Increase with 3.68x Fitment Factor
One of the important aspects of the Pay Commission is the fitment factor, which will determine salary increments in every pay grade. In case of acceptance of the proposed 3.68x fitment factor, the minimum basic pay is expected to rise from Rs 18,000 to Rs 26,000, with an increment of Rs 8,000. This would add more financial security for millions of employees.
Benchmark Impact of the 7th Pay Commission
The 7th Pay Commission set a high standard for wage revisions. It addressed various concerns, including the Minimum Pay, Pay Matrix, and Defence Pay Matrix parity with the Central Armed Police Forces. The 8th Pay Commission is expected to build on these foundations while addressing the evolving economic realities.

Balancing Expenditure and Welfare
The 8th Pay Commission aims to balance out the government spending and the welfare aspect of its own employees. Such recommendations are expected in the form of equitable pay corrections, which keep in mind good compensation with minimal financial prudence.
