Allahabad High Court Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, in his latest statements about governance in India, created an important controversy. Appearing at a Sunday function, Yadav candidly voiced the opinion that India must be governed by the whims and fancies of the majority. Social networking websites and others are all abuzz on the ramifications of the same.

Yadav, known for his outspoken remarks, elaborated on his belief that India’s governance should align with the majority's desires, a perspective he argued for in a public forum. He also made waves in 2021 when his previous statements on national issues gained considerable attention.

Background of Justice Shekhar Yadav

Justice Yadav, born on April 16, 1964, is a graduate of Allahabad University and a distinguished legal figure. He started his career as a lawyer in 1990. He specialized in civil and constitutional law at the Allahabad High Court. He worked as a government advocate and in senior legal positions for the Uttar Pradesh government and the Indian Railways. Yadav was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court in December 2019 and became a Permanent Judge in March 2021.


Justice Yadav is widely known for his judgments and is fluent in Hindi and has recently received an honorary doctorate from the Yesbud University in Lusaka, Zambia, in October. Some of his judicial stances that have captured the media are cow protection - where he pronounced the cow as the national animal for India. He had refused bail to accused persons committing cow slaughter saying the cow needs protection because of its natural right.

Recent Comments and Social Media Criticism

Speaking at the VHP event in Prayagraj, Justice Yadav said that children should be taught compassion. He said that if children witness animal slaughter, it will not help them develop sympathy. He also appealed to the younger generation to respect nature and not disrespect religious deities. His comments have set off a firestorm online, with people sharply divided on his views on governance, religion, and cultural practices.
