Cheers to ₹99 Liquor: Booze Prices to Combat Smuggling and Boost State Revenue!
Amaravati, India — The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has announced a significant reduction in liquor prices, offering a major relief to alcohol enthusiasts. Under the new policy, the price of liquor has been slashed to as low as ₹99 per 180 ml bottle of any brand, starting from October 1, 2024.
The state government aims to curb the illegal sale of alcohol and increase state revenue through this decision, which was approved during a cabinet meeting held in Amaravati. Officials believe that making liquor more affordable will discourage smuggling and encourage customers to buy from government-controlled stores.
New Liquor Policy Approved
The new policy is a key measure introduced by the Andhra Pradesh government to control the illegal trade in alcohol. According to officials, the decision to lower prices will ensure that people purchase alcohol from authorized outlets instead of relying on unauthorized or illegal sources.
The policy also aims to boost state revenue by about ₹2,000 crore. Authorities have focused on quality, quantity, and affordability to ensure that consumers get a better product at a reasonable price.
Affordable Liquor Starting at ₹99
Under the revised pricing structure, liquor will be available at just ₹99 for a 180 ml bottle, regardless of the brand. The new rates will come into effect on October 1, 2024. The policy, which was approved during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naidu, aims to promote responsible consumption and ensure a controlled, accessible alcohol supply.
Fifteen Premium Outlets to Be Opened
As part of the new policy, the government will establish 15 premium liquor outlets across Andhra Pradesh, which will be licensed for a period of five years. To obtain a license, applicants must pay a non-refundable application fee of ₹200,000. The licensing fee is divided into four slabs, ranging from ₹5 million to ₹8.5 million.
The government is hopeful that these premium outlets will not only contribute to an increase in state revenue but also help control the illegal sale of alcohol in the region.
Carrying Alcohol on Flights
The state government has also clarified the rules regarding carrying alcohol during travel. Travelers are allowed to carry up to five liters of alcohol on flights, provided the alcohol content does not exceed 70 percent. This regulation aims to provide convenience to those traveling by air, although restrictions still apply for those traveling by car or train.
No "One Nation, One Tax" on Liquor
Liquor remains outside the purview of the "One Nation, One Tax" policy, which means that different states have varying taxes on alcohol. The Andhra Pradesh government's decision to lower liquor prices is aimed at boosting revenue and controlling illegal sales, not standardizing tax rates across the country.
State Revenue Boost Expected
Officials estimate that the new policy will result in a revenue increase of around ₹2,000 crore for the state. With the introduction of affordable pricing and the opening of premium stores, the government hopes to encourage more regulated alcohol sales, contributing to both revenue growth and the reduction of illegal liquor activities.
The new policy signifies the state government's attempt to balance public safety, revenue generation, and consumer affordability. It aims to make alcohol more accessible while reducing the reliance on illegal sources, thus enhancing overall governance and regulation of the liquor market in Andhra Pradesh.
