Aparajita Bill 2024: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Introduces Historic Anti-Rape Bill in Special Assembly Session
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has introduced the "Aparajita Women and Children Bill 2024" during a special session of the state assembly. The bill, which aims to combat rape and protect women and children, has been described as historic by the Chief Minister. Following its introduction, a discussion on the bill began in the assembly.
Opposition BJP Supports the Bill
In a significant move, the opposition party BJP has extended its support to the bill. Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, expressed the BJP's full backing for the "Aparajita" bill during the assembly session. Adhikari emphasized that the BJP wants the bill to be implemented swiftly and added that it is the responsibility of the state government to ensure its proper enforcement. He further urged the state government to guarantee the immediate implementation of the legislation once it is passed.
CM Calls the Bill Historic
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed the bill on behalf of the entire state, calling it a landmark piece of legislation. She noted that on September 3, 1981, the United Nations took significant steps against violence and discrimination against women, marking a historic date. The Chief Minister expressed her sympathy for the victims who have suffered grave crimes and lost their lives, stressing the importance of strict action against the perpetrators of rape.
CM Demands CBI Investigation in Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
Addressing the recent Kolkata rape and murder case involving a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, CM Banerjee called for a thorough investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). She recalled that she was in Jhargram when the crime occurred and immediately met with the victim's family upon learning of the incident. The Chief Minister mentioned that she needed time until Sunday before handing over the case to the CBI, emphasizing that her police force was actively involved. She stated that the CBI should now take over the case to ensure justice for the victim.
Appeal to Governor for Swift Approval of the Bill
Following the introduction of the bill, CM Banerjee urged the BJP to request Governor C.V. Ananda Bose to expedite the bill's approval. She also pointed out that the central government has stopped funding all fast-track courts in the state since 2013, despite the presence of 88 such courts in West Bengal.
Pending Cases in Fast-Track Courts
Discussing the state's judiciary, the Chief Minister highlighted that there are separate courts for women in Bengal, including fast-track courts. She revealed that around 7,000 cases are currently pending in these courts. While the state government is diligently working to investigate these cases, delays in court proceedings have hindered the delivery of justice.
The Chief Minister's call for action and the support from the opposition underline the urgency and importance of the "Aparajita Women and Children Bill 2024" in addressing crimes against women and ensuring swift justice.
