It’s 9th April today, and we are celebrating the 128th birth anniversary of Rahul Sanskrityayan, a great scholar who had taken birth 128 years ago in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district in April 9, 1893.
He knew more than 30 languages, traveled thousands of miles, and taught at reputed institutions of his time.
His literary works include travelogues, sociology, history, religion, Tibetology, fiction, science, drama, and essays. For his involvement in the freedom struggle, he faced imprisonment three times in his life. Also known as ‘the father of travelogue,” he played a crucial role to give travelogue the shape of the literature.
Here we have enlisted some interesting facts about Rahul Sanskrityayan:
- He was born as Kedarnath Pandey in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district on April 9. 1893.
- He lived with a group of impoverished students and learned Sanskrit in Varanasi.
- Inspired by a meeting with mahant of Vaishnav math, he acquired formidable knowledge of Sanskrit and Brahminical canons.
- He turned towards Buddhism and became a Buddhist monk. Rahul Sanskrityayan also went to Sri Lanka where he learned Pali and studied Buddhist texts.
- Furthermore, he is considered the father of travelogue who played an important role in establishing it as literature in the Hindi language.
