Basavaraj Bommai is Karnataka’s new Chief Minister. Bommmai, 61 is a close aide of BS Yediyurappa and former state Home Minister. Mr Bommai is trained as a mechanical engineer.
He has worked for Tata Motors in Pune for three years before turning into an entrepreneur. He has also served as political secretary to Chief Minister JH Patel.
The new Karnataka CM has also been a minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Legislation, and Water Resources.
Mr Bommai belongs to Lingayat community. He was first elected to the Karnataka Legislative Council in 1998. Quit the Janata Dal and joined the BJP in 2008.
Bommai began his political career with the Janata Dal. He was also a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council twice. Mr Bommai is also Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Council.
Mr Bommai has been a close confidant of Mr Yediyurappa.
