BPSC Exam Controversy: Protests, Allegations, and Clashes in Bihar

BPSC Exam Controversy: The BPSC (Bihar Public Service Commission) Exam has sparked widespread protests and unrest in Bihar, with students alleging irregularities and unfair practices. The controversy escalated after reports of paper shortages and allegations of malpractice at exam centers, leading to clashes between students and authorities.

How the BPSC Exam Controversy Began

On December 13, 2024, the BPSC conducted the 70th Preliminary Exam across 912 exam centers in Bihar. However, issues began surfacing when students raised concerns over the normalization process for evaluating exam scores. Despite an official announcement ruling out normalization, the controversy reignited due to alleged irregularities at the Bapu Exam Center in Patna.

At the center, 192 question papers were delivered instead of the required 288, forcing authorities to use additional question papers from another center. Students alleged these papers were not sealed, leading to concerns about exam fairness.

Protests Over Alleged Malpractice

Students protested, claiming the irregularities amounted to an indirect form of normalization. The situation worsened when reports surfaced of a district magistrate allegedly slapping a student during the protests. This incident further fueled the agitation, with students demanding accountability and justice.

Authorities offered students 20 extra minutes to complete the exam, but many walked out, carrying their OMR sheets as a form of protest.

Student Protests Turn Violent

The protests escalated in Patna's Gardnibagh area, where students gathered in large numbers. Prominent coaching instructors like Khan Sir and Rahman Sir joined the demonstrations, alongside political leaders such as Tejashwi Yadav, Pappu Yadav, and Prashant Kishor.

The situation intensified when students, following Prashant Kishor’s suggestion, organized a student parliament at Gandhi Maidan. After the event, a massive crowd marched towards the Raj Bhavan, leading to clashes with police. Authorities resorted to using water cannons to disperse the protesters and maintain order.

Key Concerns Raised by Students

Normalization Debate: Students opposed any move to normalize scores, fearing it would lead to unfair results.
Paper Shortage and Malpractice: Allegations of irregularities at exam centers, including unsealed question papers.
Unfair Treatment: Reports of police action, including lathi charges and alleged misconduct by officials.

Government and Opposition Response

The BPSC announced that exams were canceled only at the Bapu Exam Center, with re-examinations scheduled for January 4, 2025. However, students demanded a broader investigation into malpractice across all centers.

Leaders like Tejashwi Yadav and Prashant Kishor extended their support, urging the government to address the grievances and ensure transparency in future exams.
