CBSE Announces Major Changes in Board Exams for 10th and 12th Students

CBSE has announced important changes for both classes 10 and 12 board examinations in 2025, intended to de-stress students from academic pressure and to improve the quality of learning. This update was released at the 'Bridging the Gap' Principals' Summit, held at Indore, as Vikas Kumar Agarwal, Regional Officer, Bhopal CBSE, presented a plethora of recommendations to help students.
CBSE Announces Major Reforms for 2025 Board Exams
First, a reduction of the syllabus to 15 per cent across all subjects cuts across. This is to ease academic pressure on students so that they learn instead of merely memorizing. According to Agarwal, this will give better comprehension of material to the students while helping the students longer on collegiate as well as their professional fronts.
In addition to the syllabus curtailment, CBSE is going to review its assessment pattern too. Now, 40% of a student's final grade will depend on internal assessment whereas 60% will depend on final written exams. This will include varied projects, assignments, and periodical tests, which will ensure that students keep learning throughout the course and, therefore, do not perform solely at the examination time.
Digital Assessment and Open Book Format Testing
CBSE has also decided to digitally assess the answer sheets so that the process is more transparent and efficient. Yet another interesting experiment that the board has recently done is the open book exam for subjects like English Literature and Social Science, which could be implemented in the near future.

The board exams will be single-term from 2025, while from 2026 and beyond, CBSE is looking to roll back two-term exams. These moves will look to streamline evaluation and keep students occupied, engaging with the curriculum all year long, thus taking a holistic approach to education aligned with the future academic standards of the world.
