Chandigarh Weather Update: Fog, Cold Wave, and Low Temperatures to Disrupt Travel on December 16, 2024
Chandigarh residents are in for a cold spell as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning for fog on December 16-17, 2024. With temperatures plummeting to sub-5°C levels and a cold wave gripping the region, the weather is expected to disrupt daily activities and travel plans.
On Saturday night, the minimum temperature in Chandigarh fell to a quite cold 4.9°C-five degrees below its usual for this time of year. The maximum was marginally higher at 22.7°C, but the steep drop in night temperature highlights the severity of the current spell of cold wave. People will have to put on layers further as the temperatures dip down in the coming days.
The yellow warning issued by the IMD warns that fog will seriously degrade visibility, and a dense fog may impact both travel on roads and routine activity. A thick fog may reduce visibility to as low as 50 meters in some areas, making it difficult for commuters to travel safely. The onset of fog usually occurs when tiny water droplets suspend in the air, reducing visibility. It may last several hours, especially during the early mornings and late evenings.
As fog continues and temperatures remain low, the weather in Chandigarh will continue to play its game with commuters. Temperatures between 5°C and 22°C are expected in the city for the next few days, while the IMD has forecasted that from December 20-26, it will be colder, and minimum temperatures may even touch 2°C-4°C in some areas. According to the IMD, the cold wave will continue in the region, but it predicts that this winter will generally be warmer than usual and normal rainfall is expected during December through February.
