Today, Chennai and several neighboring districts in Tamil Nadu are bracing for a deluge; the India Meteorological Department has issued an alert for November 13. The IMD has warned of thunderstorms with lightning that may disrupt the normal flows especially in Chennai and eleven districts that encircle it. The Chennai authorities declared a school holiday on Tuesday, but they have not yet declared school closures on Wednesday.

Districts On IMD Alert
The IMD weather forecast says that heavy rain would lash Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and Madurai. According to the IMD forecast, this would be accompanied by hail showers and lightening. The remaining areas are Puducherry, Karaikal, the rest of coastal Andhra Pradesh and South Interior Karnataka, which border Tamil Nadu.

Moderate to heavy rainfall likely to occur in the city today, and thunderstorms at certain places. Maximum temperature will be around 30°C, and the lowest temperature will be in the range of 24°C and 25°C, Regional Meteorological Centre said here today.

Several areas in Chennai reported rains measuring between 8-10 cm on Tuesday. While the rains continued unabated in various parts of the city, localised rains measuring up to 5 cm were recorded in other places. Locations like Perungudi, Alandhur, Adyar, and Meenambakkam AWS have reported the highest rains today. Low-pressure system Since November 11, the upper-air circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal has developed into a low-pressure system and has been continuing since yesterday. The system has strengthened an area of cyclonic circulation extending as high as 4.5 km above sea level, which is expected to dominate the weather over Chennai for the next few days.

School Holiday and Precautions
With the heavy rain warning issued, the Collector of Chennai declared a precautionary holiday to all schools in Chennai on Tuesday. Officials have not confirmed whether schools will be closed on Wednesday, November 13, but are monitoring closely.

Wider Local Impact
IMD has issued weather alerts outside the state of Tamil Nadu as well. In Kerala, Mahe, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Yanam will also face the storm accompanied with rain.
