Supreme Court Expands Live Streaming to All Benches Under CJI Chandrachud's Initiative

In a historic move, the Supreme Court of India has decided to extend live streaming of hearings to all benches, making court proceedings more accessible to the public. Until now, only the cases heard by the Constitution Bench were streamed live. However, under the initiative of Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, this facility will soon be expanded to all benches of the Supreme Court.

This marks the first time that regular, day-to-day hearings across all benches will be live-streamed, allowing citizens to witness the judicial process in real-time. Sources have revealed that an app, which will facilitate the live streaming of all cases, is currently in the final stages of testing, and will soon be launched to provide a seamless experience.

The practice of live streaming began in 2022, following the COVID-19 pandemic, when the Supreme Court introduced the feature for hearings under the Constitution Bench. The first-ever live stream took place on September 27, 2022, where three Constitution Bench cases were broadcasted. This initial live stream garnered significant attention, with more than 800,000 viewers tuning in to watch the proceedings on platforms like YouTube and other social media channels.

The live streaming initiative was a response to increasing demands for transparency and public access to the judicial process. Since its implementation, the Supreme Court has seen a positive reception, prompting the decision to extend this feature beyond the Constitution Bench.

This development is expected to bring the Supreme Court closer to the public, allowing more people to follow key legal battles and understand how decisions are made in the nation's highest court. As the court prepares for full implementation, this move is seen as a major step toward greater transparency and openness in the Indian judicial system.
