Climate disaster: Kerala flash floods wreak havoc, heavy rains batter Uttarakhand

Flash floods in Kerala have been wreaking havoc in the state. The government has also opened the shutters of Idukki reservoir’s Cheruthoni dam.

Sooner sirens rang warning the people downstream; yet the amount of water released — 100 cumecs was limited to just 5 per cent compared to then.

Also, around 60 families were evacuated from the low lying areas.

It is to be noted that the last time the dam was opened was during the 2018 floods.

Moreover, intense rains are likely but quite unusual in October. These have been predicted for the next two days. A total of 12 districts are on orange alert.

The heavy rains have resulted in floods and landslides in Kerala state. So far, the intense rains have claimed 27 lives.

Heavy rains in Uttarakhand have claimed 34 lives so far. The weather department has also indicated a significant reduction in rainfall activity over Uttarakhand from Tuesday.

Social media is flooded with chaos and disaster across the state, with scary videos and pics emerging of roads and buildings flooded and submerged, bridges destroyed and rivers overflowing.
